I Can't Wait For The Superbowl!

I can't wait for the Superbowl this Sunday. Honestly I couldn't tell you who was playing or what kind of seasons each team had. My interest in pro football is usually confined to whether the Browns beat Pittsburgh and Baltimore. Beyond that it trails off significantly.

No my interest in the the Superbowl, keen enough for me to TiVo it, concerns the Superbowl Ads. Every year, I go online after the game and view the ads and many of them are quite clever. But this year I will record them just to catch a single ad. And ad that has stirred up much controversy and is causing liberal women's groups' collective heads to explode. I am talking about Focus on the Family's ad featuring Tim Tebow and his courageous mom who will tell how she, despite recommendations from her doctor to abort Tim for her own health's sake, decided to carry her now famous son to term. This act of pro choice (she chose life) has got NOW in a lather. They have denounced the ad, without even seeing it, as devisive and hurtful to women. The fact that this ad has all these whiny liberal pro-abortion types crying foul only makes me want to see it that much more. The reaction only shows the hypocrisy of "pro-choice". Mrs. Tebow chose life and apparantly she is NOT allowed to speak of her choice because according to the National Organization of Women she didn't choose correctly. And her wrong choice will divde American women who watch it during the Superbowl.

The only way that makes sense is that NOW and PP are afraid that women moved by Mrs. Tebow's testimony may choose life. And while rational thinking human beings still regard this as a choice, NOW doesn't. To them the only choice is murder. And they are so determined that no other point of view be heard that they have petitioned and threatened CBS about airing the ad.

Did I mention that Mrs. Tebow and her son are both Christians? And that Tim has a testimony of being celebate and is waiting until he gets married before having sex? He also puts Bible verses in his eye black during football games? To me that explains the intensity of the hatred and venom of those opposing him and the ad that will air this Sunday.  I can't wait.

In Memoriam : Eartha Kitt

The world lost a very distinctive voice and an most unique personality Dec 25th. Veteran actress, singer, dancer Eartha Kitt died at 81.

Through the 1950s and '60s, she performed on stage and television, in films and nightclubs.

Her best-known TV performance was as Catwoman on the '60s series Batman. Her distinctive purr was later featured in the animated film The Emperor's New Groove and the Disney Channel series The Emperor's New School, for which she won Emmy Awards in 2007 and 2008.

The biggest controversy of her career occurred in 1968, when she spoke out against the Vietnam War at a White House luncheon hosted by first lady Lady Bird Johnson.

She was investigated by the FBI and the CIA and subsequently worked almost exclusively overseas. She later returned and, in 1978, was the toast of Broadway performing in Timbuktu.

Just before she died I had downloaded several of her songs including "I Want to Be Evil" I also have a copy of her version of "Santa Baby" which was certified gold last month. Earth Kitt had one child, a daughter Kitt Shapiro from her marriage to John Barry Ryan. Kitt said this of her mother:

"I had the most amazing mother. She was not afraid of dying. She was in pain, but funny right to the end. One of the last things she said when I was talking loudly to her - like you do to a sick person - was: 'I'm dying. I'm not losing my hearing!'
"And she said, 'There won't be a burial. I'll be cremated. I don't want to take up space.'
"My mother had no regrets. She said: 'I have lived an amazing life. I did everything I ever dreamed of.' I was truly, truly blessed to have landed in her lap."

Eartha Kitt had to rise above an early life of abuse and her story is inspiring. I hope that at some point she was able to come to the saving Grace and Knowledge of Jesus. Please pray for her daughter and two grandchildren.

In Memoriam: Majel Barrett Roddenberry

Majel Roddenberry passed away today. While every trekker knows of her work in ST:TOS, ST:TNG, ST:DS9, ST:V, she was also involved in getting other Roddenberry projects to television. And she was genuinely a nice lady. I had the privilege of meeting and talking to her in person a few years back when she was the guest of honor at the Gen Con Game Fair. She walked right up to us while we were siting in the atrium of the Hyatt and asked us about the game we were playing. We talked for several minutes before she moved on. Very friendly. 

The story says she passed away from leukemia.  Please pray for her family.

13 TV Shows I would Like to Be a Character On.

Ever wanted to be one of the "Friends"? Me neither they were weird. But there were plenty other shows that I watched and thought, "Hey it would be cool to be a character on that show." So here are 13 shows that I would like to have been a character on.

1. Star Trek Man ever since I was a kid I wanted to boldly go where no man had gone before. I could have been a bridge officer. I quickly learned that I didn't want to wear a red shirt on that ship though.


2. The Name of The Game I imagined myself working for Gene Barry as the editor/reporter of his only Black magazine. These days though I think reporters rarely investigate beyond their hotels.


3. Search Hi tech spy/anti-terrorist organization. I would have liked to be a base operative working with Burgess Meredith


4. Space 1999 I would have liked to been on Moon Base Alpha when it took off and started exploring the galaxy.


5. Dr. Who How cool would it be to go tooling around the time-space continuum with Tom Baker or Sylvester McCoy? The current Doctor isn't bad but his writers can get preachy and anti-American at times.


6. UFO I know this is the third British Sci-Fi show in a row but they did have some good ones. I thought it would be great to be part of a super secret defense force protecting the Earth from alien invaders. I think I would be an interceptor pilot blowing UFOs out of space before they reach Earth.


7. Hill Street Blues I thought it would be cool to be one of the men in blue of the Hill Street precinct. I don't do undercover well so I guess I would be a hard nosed, by-the-book detective.


8. Star Trek: Voyager I confess I had doubts about the show in the beginning but it grew on me. I wanted to be an officer who ultimately married the voluptuous and deadly Seven of Nine. She could assimilate me anytime.


9. TimeTrax I wanted to be a second cop sent to the past to recapture escaped felons from the future.


10. M*A*S*H You know they had a black doctor at the 4077th for the first episode(I guess they didn't feel comfortable calling him Spear-Chucker). I thought they needed one. Before Larry Linville left, I wanted to be a Black Winchester. Mad skills, sharp wit, high intellect, and class with a capital C. They must have thought the same way but made him white.


11. Northern Exposure I thought that after the neurotic jewish doctor left, a funky fresh black urban doctor could set up practice in Cicely.


12. Buffy The Vampire Slayer I was feeling too old to be one of the "Scooby Gang" but I could see myself as a militant watcher type of person. Special training and techno/arcane gadgets to fight evil darkness.


13. Starrgate Atlantis Taking up residence in the Pegasus galaxy as a member of the military team. Or sometimes I imagine my character as a resident alien fighting the good fight against the Wraith.

Newsworthy Notes

I found this to be an interesting bit of news. Lynne Spears Parenting Book Delayed Indefinitely
Why you ask? Because her famous daughter is pregnant with her boyfriend's baby. No; not Brittney, her other famous daughter, 16-year-old Jamie Lynn Spears. The Nickelodeon star announced that she is 12 weeks along and she's keeping her baby. The father is her "long time boyfriend". LONG TIME BOYFRIEND!!?? She's 16! How long are we talking here?

But buying Lynne's book on parenting would have been like buying Jeffery Dahmer's book of recipes. Not a bright idea. Seeing how baddly Brittney turned out did anyone think Jamie would actually do better?

13 Favorite Television Theme Songs

I stole the idea for this week's Thursday Thirteen from Chelle Y. I would also like to thank Jay Campbell for leaving me the link to http://www.televisiontunes.com. I have links to all of the themes (except the two I used YouTube for) so you can listen to the theme if you want. (It will open in a separate window). My taste in music is very eclectic. So don't let it surprise you if you don't remember or even have heard of some of these 13 T.V. theme songs.

1. Man From UNCLE (Link to 1966 version) There was a variation on the theme every year. 1965 and 1966 were the ones I remember. The theme for the Girl from UNCLE was yet another variation on the this song.


2. Johnny Quest (Link to Theme) I loved this cartoon when I was a kid. They subsequently ruined it with a bunch of P.C. crap but the theme was excellent.


3. The Name of the Game (Link to Theme) Something about late sixties early seventies television themes that I really liked. Very jazzy with a big band behind them. TNotG was a great show too!


4. S.W.A.T. (Link to Theme) This theme was a commercial hit during the disco days of the seventies.


5. Soul Train (TSOP) (Link to Theme) Another disco era hit with a big band sound.


6. Rockford Files (Link to Theme) Another theme song musical hit. I didn't watch the show but I heard the theme on the radio everywhere.


7. Hill Street Blues (Link to Theme) I remember hearing this on the radio too. But I never missed an episode of HSB. An excellent T.V. show and theme song.


8. Taxi (Angela) (Link to Theme) I enjoyed watching Taxi. But I was really happy when Angela (The name of the theme song) did so well. I had been a Bob James fan for years and was really happy he got a mainstream hit.


9. Quantum Leap (Link to Theme) I'm a leap head. I loved everything about the show including the great theme song.


10. Twin Peaks (Link to Theme) To be honest, I was never a TP fan. I saw David Lynch's "Eraserhead" and found it disturbing on many levels. So I never watched more than an episode or two of Twin Peaks. I did love the theme song and the soundtrack album.


11. Northern Exposure (Link to Theme) An incredible show with an awesome theme. Where else will you find harmonica, accordion, saxophone with brazilian percussion?


12. Now and Again I found this show through Bravo's "Brilliant But Canceled" series. Dennis Haysbert builds a twenty six year-old white male superman body (Eric Close) and puts John Goodman's forty-something brain in it. It is not really a comedy but a well written show. The theme song was done by Narada Michael Walden and he never recorded it on any of his other works. That is a shame because the theme is very nice indeed. They did two versions (same song but just used different parts at differnt times). Thank God for YouTube. Here is the theme (both)



13. Cowboy Bebop (Tank!) Anime fans know what I am talking about. Yoko Kanno and the Seatbelts perform this great jazzy big band sounding theme song called Tank!. The series itself was very good. Lots of style and absolutely great music.

There were others too. I liked a lot of the Norman Lear show themes. Does anyone NOT know the words to the Jefferson's theme? The Mary Tyler Moore Show? Leave your favorite in the comments.

Now And Again You Get What You Want

In 2000 there was a television show on CBS called Now and Again. I never saw it then. I saw it years later on Bravo during their "Brilliant But Canceled" series. In a nutshell, a doctor/scientist played by Dennis Haysbert constructs an twenty six year old superman played by Eric Close, for the U.S. government. Unable to construct a "mind" they harvest John Goodman's forty something brain and put it in the body. The show lasted one season but long enough to show incredible potential in writing. I felt bad for the character Michael "Newman" because the wife he loved was grieving for him and the daughter he raised had to go on without him and yet he was still around, unknown to them and unable to interact with his family. But he does anyway even under "threat" of having them killed. I mean wouldn't you? He obviously can't tell them who he really is. He constantly bumps into them while out saving the country from evil doers. The story lines were imaginative and thought provoking as well as warm and touching.

So why the interest? Well I have already done next week's Thursday Thirteen and it is about T.V. theme songs. Now and Again had a great theme song by Narada Michael Walden. I linked the theme song(s) found at YouTube. I was lamenting the fact that there wasn't a clip avalable and voila! I also found a music video with scenes from the the show. I am in heaven! So here is the video and the song for this great show.

13 Spin-offs of Other T.V. Shows
I've done television lists before. And I'm going to do one again. This time the theme of the list is spin-offs. I am listing 13 shows that were spin-offs of other shows.

1. Maude (1972-1978) This show was a spin-off of "All in the Family". The eponymous Maude was Edith Bunker's cousin.


2. The Jeffersons (1975-1985) Another "All in the Family" spin-off. George and "Weezie" were Archie and Edith's neighbors.


3. Good Times (1974-1979) This show was spawned by "Maude". Florida Evans was Maude's wise-cracking housekeeper.


4. Happy Days (1974-1984) Happy Days was spawned from a vignette on the show "Love American Style" called "Love and the Happy Days".


5. Lavern and Shirley (1976-1983) A spin-off of "Happy Days". Lavern and Shirley were friends of Fonzie who double dated Ritchie and Potsie.


6. Mork and Mindy (1978-1982) Another "Happy Days" spin-off. Mork appeared in a dream episode.


7. Rhoda (1974-1978) This was one of the spin-offs of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show". It was funny for a season then the characters got married and it went downhill from there. Kinda like real marriage so I'm told.


8. Lou Grant (1977-1982) This was weird. Lou Grant was Mary Richard's boss on the "Mary Tyler Moore Show" which was a situation comedy. The show "Lou Grant" was an excellent Emmy award winning drama about the same character. Go figure.


9. Trapper John M.D. (1979-1986) Some say this was a spin-off of M*A*S*H the TV show. It would then be one of two drama's spawned from comedies (the aforementioned Lou Grant being the other). But some say, for legal reasons, the show was spun-off of M*A*S*H the movie. I don't know. I do know Wayne Rogers was offered the role and he turned it down.


10. Barnaby Jones (1973-1980) Did you know that Buddy Ebsen's P.I. character was introduced on William Conrad's show "Canon"? Live and learn.


11. Daria (1997-2001) This animated gem had it's unlikely start from "Beavis and Butt-Head" of all places. I recommend Daria. Not so much Beavis and Butthead


12. Family Matters (1989-1998) This show was a spin-off of "Perfect Strangers". Harriet and Carl Winslow were friends of Balkie and Larry.


13. Angel (1999-2004) Angel was spawned from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", Different enough to be interesting and yet it had the same Buffy flavor Josh Whedon fans had come to love. I miss both shows.

I purposely limited the spin-offs to those shows that actually lasted more than a season. That way I didn't have to mention shows like Joanie Loves Chachie, or Phyllis. Many shows were spun off hit TV series that crashed and burned. Do you have a favorite Spin-off?

Deep in Thought Today

I was just reminiscing the other day about a very special spiritual episode of a very deep television show. In a highly dramatic turn of events the hero was struck by a taxi. In the hospital he is surrounded by his friends and loved ones all of whom fondly relate their favorite memories of our hero. As he lies there near death he sees a light. Suddenly, a flash of lightning, a clap of thunder and there is a person standing there.


"Who are you?"

"I am the part of you that lives on after you die."

"You're my student loan?"


Ah Herman's Head. What a deep spiritual show. Anyway I was thinking about that because of issues I am having with my student loan. My God I am nearly fifty years old and I am still paying on it! Is there no end in sight? Sheesh. Had I known that it was going to be like this I would have gotten a stupid degree.

Well because I am a total slacker very busy lately I have decided to forward something I got via email. And since it is easier than me actually thinking up something I present this to you:

If you remember the Original Hollywood Squares and its comics, this may bring a tear to your eyes. These great questions and answers are from the days when 'Hollywood Squares' game show responses were spontaneous and clever, not scripted and (often) dull, as they are now. Peter Marshall was the host asking the questions, of course.

Favorite TV Shows
Well I knew I had to get around to it eventually. I would have to come up with 13 T.V. shows that weren't SpongeBob Squarepants and put them in a list. First the history, since after all, this is all about me. Once upon a time I was a walking T.V. Guide. I could tell you what was on when and who were the stars. I watched so much television I thought I'd turn into one. Not anymore. Since I started living a Christian life, television has gotten less important. It has also gotten more violent and morally corrupt and the amount of nudity makes me nauseous. As of this moment in time, there is only one network show that I watch (assuming you consider CW a network) and it is Smallville. And you know I might stop watching it. Lana Lang (Kristen Kreuk) has turned into such a slut kitten, and all the females on the show are having illicit sex. I do watch other shows but their new seasons haven't started yet. So my list consists of shows new and old that I have enjoyed in my life

1. Smallville This season Clark Kent isn't the only hero in town. I like Green Arrow but as I mentioned earlier, Lana has been in the sack a lot lately.


2. Stargate Atlantis I wasn't sure I would like the show but the characters and situations have grown on me. I like SG-1 too and am sad to see it go


3. Doctor Who I am a Doctor Who fan from the Tom Baker days. I love the new series despite a serious liberal slant and a couple jabs at GW Bush.


4. Hill Street Blues I was in front of the set every night this show came on. It had a shaky start but NBC kept the faith and didn't pull it, a move that paid off. I also liked St. Elsewhere from the same people.


5. Northern Exposure I loved this show when it was on. Janine Turner a total hotty. I sometimes imagined living in a place like Cicely. Oddly I cared the least for Rob Morrow's character, Dr. Joel Fleischman, but I never saw an episode after he left.


6. Star Trek Okay I loved most things Trek. I loved the original series. I even liked the cartoon version. I was ecstatic when the Next Generation aired. I was pleasantly surprised and pleased by Deep Space Nine. I even fell in love with Voyager. I was very disappointed with Enterprise except with the casting of Scott Bakula. There are rumors of a new Trek with Kirk and Spock in the early days. I hate it already without even seeing it. Enterprise should have taught them a valuable lesson in revisionist history.

7. Quantum Leap I'm a Leap Head. What an awesome show. Where else could you get weekly life drama with the sci-fi in the background? Nowhere. Scott Bakula and Dean Stockwell were consistently great.


8. The Six Million Dollar Man In a time when Sci-fi on television was scarce, Steve Austin made life bearable. I would wait anxiously every Friday for the new episode. I even bought a new fangled snack food called Pringles. How'd they do that to those chips? I watched SMDM and even The Bionic Woman. Things got really weird when they were on separate networks.


9. Night Gallery Rod Serling was warped. I'm warped. Hence the attraction. Night Gallery usually had shorter stories than Twilight Zone which appealed to my adolescent attention span.


10. The Name of the Game Back when I was young and naive and thought that magazines and other print media cared about truth more than agenda, there was The Name of the Game. Each week was a show that starred either Gene Barry, Tony Franciosa, or Robert Stack. Occasionally they had guest stars as the main character too. They were magazine editors/reporters and were always in some deep trouble getting a story for their magazine. I think Stack worked for Crime magazine and Franciosa worked on People (before there was a People magazine.) Don't ask me why a nine year old boy would like this show, I just did. I also watched it in syndication years later in high school, late at night after SNL. I found I still liked the shows.


11. Buffy the Vampire Slayer I thought the film was funny but I wasn't sure I would watch a television show about Buffy. The first season was a little shaky but after that I was hooked. I loved the characters and the villains and life in Sunnydale in general. The writing was excellent and witty. I was really sad to see Sara Michelle Geller hang up her stake. I also loved the spinoff, Angel. I think it's run was too short.


12. M*A*S*H What can you say about a show that lasted three times longer than the conflict it portrayed? I loved the show. I was glued to the set when it was on. It was on during my transition from childhood to adulthood. weird to think about it that way but I started watching it as a kid. Some of the characters really changed over the life of the show.


13. Mythbusters I have never gotten into the whole "reality TV" thing except with the Discovery Channel. I love Mythbusters. The hosts Adam and Jamie are perfect and the things they do are downright entertaining. Cast in that same mold is Mike Rowe and Dirty Jobs. I wish I had a dirty job so they would come out and do a show but working in a soap factory doesn't present many dirty opportunities.

Okay you are saying "What about Friends Dane? And surely you watched Seinfeld!" Nope. Not an episode. They are not even on my radar. Now I would add Law and Order and the vegetable soup spin offs. They have been consistently well done and have been on forever. But I never watched them regularly. I have this weird thing going on though. If I sit down and catch the first few minutes of a Law and Order episode, I generally have to sit through the whole thing. Don't know why I just do. So I avoid channel surfing late at night for that reason. Leave a favorite show with you comment!
